I’ve Seen You Here Before

Same face, Different story

I look in the mirror and I see you looking back at me. You’re smiling, giving me a high five. Acknowledging my presence, appreciating everything I’ve done for you.

I put my head band on, tie my hair back, and get my products lined up in order for my nighttime routine.

You start taking off my makeup slowly. You’re grateful I’m doing this for myself, granted the dread I face night after night thinking about the routine. You’re proud.

I wash my face wash off with cold water. I look up and you pat my face dry.

The voice we share in our heads starts saying affirmations as you continue the overtly lengthy process. Toner. Essence. Serums. Moisturizer.

But we’ve been here before.

On a different day.

With a different story.

Tonight we’re happy. Tonight we love self care and productivity.

But I’ve seen you here, wiping my tears. I’ve shared my company with you as my red, swollen eyes go down, so only you and I know we’ve been crying.

I’ve seen you here before, early in the morning. When you’re too lazy to even touch my face. When that shared inner voice is just a yawn. We both agree - its too early for thoughts. (Actually the only thought is “cooffffeeee”)

We’ve laughed together, while you put the lipstick on me, that my girl friends and I are passing around in the bathroom.

I’ve seen your weirdest faces.

I’ve seen your best looks.

I’ve seen you in all of the states, all of the countries.

You always show up for me, don’t you?

You’ve seen me with my prom dress on.

You’ve seen me with dance competition makeup on, on my little kid face.

You’ve seen my acne, and my clear skin. My short hair, my long hair. Even my short lived green hair.

I look into your eyes, and you look into mine. Day after day, time after time. You see me, really see me.

You’ve seen every piece of me there is.

You’ve been there through my darkest of days, and happiest of times.

It’s you. You’re the one.

The one I can trust. Share all of my deepest secrets with. Dance naked with.

Moments like this, when you realize who you are, who you’ve been and who’s been with you.

I love seeing you. I love you seeing me.

Same place and time tomorrow?

Bathroom mirror?

It’s a date.
